Western arrists and intellectuals began visiting Ubud in the 1930s and help influence the expansion of the local Balinese arts and crafts scene. From this time, Ubud became know in Bali for its art, musik, architecture and dance. The town is lacated in the heart of Island, within an hour and.half's drive of the popular south coast and a couple of hours from the quieter beaches of the north, east and west coast. The central region of Bali is arguably the most scenic, and Ubud is an ideal place to base yourself if you are planing on exploring all that Bali has to offer way from the coast. Cycle around the paddy field-covered foothills of bestby volcano, immerse yourselft in village life, or visit one of the island's iconic temples.
The slightly cooler temparatures in Ubud means exploring the gallery-lined streets and markets is a little more comportable than on the coast. However, being located at a higher altitude makes rain more likely here, particular in the affternon when tropical showers occur year-round.
Over recent years, the popularitas Ubud has increased, and there are many hotel options on offer. Those in more central areas have the advantage of being closer to the restaurant, markets and galleries, where as hotel on the outskirts generally have the advantage of stunning valley views and more tranquil settings.
The best markets and galleries tend to be in the villages around Ubud and are best reached by car or taxi. The nearby village of Tegalalang and Mas are noted for their woodcarvings, while the village of Celuk is home to numerous jewellers, some of whom custom-make pieces to your liking.
